Nothing shakes off months and months of stress and burnout like a big, true vacation. Self care is health care. There’s just something about a completely new environment that allows you to come home with a new, fresh outlook. While the “staycation” has its role in self care, I just can’t get the same emotional and physical “transformation” that I get from traveling to someplace completely different. The change in scenery of scenery is great for a “reset.”
I’m excited that people are safely traveling again because I think that the fact that “vacations are back” is really important for emotional health. In Booking.com’s ‘Travel Predictions 2022 Research’ report, many people said that they didn’t realize how important travel was for their emotional health until they no longer had the option to travel. in the same survey, more than 79 percent of travelers said that travel is more beneficial to their mental well-being than any other forms of self-care.
Why Self Care Is Important for Mental Health
A vacation is the ultimate self-care tool for mental health because it allows us to intentionally put aside time for ourselves. Visiting a new place allows our brains and bodies to step out of the mold of the everyday grind. We get to encounter experiences, sights, sounds, tastes, sensations, cultures and people that change our perceptions. The best part is that we take that “person we become on vacation” with us for the rest of our lives!
Hopefully, you’re not carrying around any worries that people will judge you for taking time off for yourself. I don’t think there can be any argument against the fact that everyone needs to recharge after months of isolation, stress, and endless Zoom meetings. With all the stress and burnout, it’s way past time for self care.
Deciding that you’re not worried about being judged by others is freeing. It’s your time to take care of yourself. Isn’t that the first step to good self-care?
So, Where’s the Best Place for a Self-Care Vacation?
While I think any destination that changes your scenery is great, I recommend somewhere relaxing where you can go to truly “reset” and relax.
One of My Favorite Places for Relaxation Is Playa Del Carmen
If you’ve never been to Playa del Carmen, I’ll fill you in on this treasure of a resort town in Mexico. I instantly became hooked with the”boho” vibe of Playa. It offers the perfect mix of tranquility and activities perfect for self-care.
Perched on the glittery “Maya Riviera” on the Caribbean side of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Playa del Carmen is a popular tourist spot. However, you can very easily visit serene, relaxing spots where you feel like you’re the only person in the world. The area is famed for offering beautiful beaches with white sand and palm trees.
Self-Care in Playa
While I haven’t been to Playa del Carmen since before the pandemic, I can tell you that it offered plenty of self-care opportunities during my previous visits. I have it on my list of places I need to go as part of my post-pandemic self-revival plan! While Playa del Carmen is known for being glittery, I can’t stress enough that it is a true oasis by the sea. You can use the scenery, setting and sea air to your advantage. There are lots of “free” and “priceless” self-care activities like riding your bike or doing yoga. There are so many spas here!
Where to Stay
During my most recent visit to Playa del Carmen, I took the suggestion of a friend who is a very savvy world traveler to book a stay at Viva Wyndham Azteca. Oh my goodness! In addition to being absolutely stunning, this resort was really affordable. It even took the stress out of planning a vacation because it’s an all-inclusive experience. You can do as much or as little as you want while staying here. I could focus on just “being” because breakfast, lunch and dinner were all taken care of. Once I checked into my room with a pool view, I could just relax. The unlimited drinks, wines and cocktails also helped. I spent a big chunk of my time there just slinking away to beautiful sites. However, I do remember that the resort hosted things like dance competitions, cooking classes, craft markets and oceanfront yoga. These are all things that can be an important part of self care.
As the world opens up, we need to be willing to open ourselves up to the world again. Traveling, exploring and experiencing new things is part of that. I know that getting a change of view is the most important self-care step for me.
