A quick scroll through Instagram and you’ll see tons of success stories from people who started new side hustles during the pandemic. Some went full time with their side hustle and have become quite successful. You have decided to invest in your passion too. But, now you are at the point where you are ready to give up. Or, maybe one of your New Year goals was to start a new exercise routine. But, it’s already January and you haven’t even started. You’re looking for all the tips to get motivated that you can find. So, what is the secret to developing the motivation to work on your goals— even when you don’t feel like doing a single thing?
Tips to Get Motivated
Building a successful business or achieving any goal really requires focus, motivation, patience and gratitude. Some days, I feel focused and motivated; but not patient or grateful. Other days, I have lots of patience but lack the will to motivate myself or stay focused.
I’ve learned over the years to be more patient and kinder with myself and less judgy when it comes to staying focused. It’s OK to sometimes lack motivation. Everyone has days when they feel like doing nothing. And while this is normal, we need to find that inner strength to keep working towards our goals, especially during those stressful times or periods when we can’t see the immediate payoff. Staying consistent is the key to success. So, how can you stay dedicated to something when you don’t necessarily feel motivated?
These are some of the things that help me stay dedicated to my goals (even on cold, rainy days when I’d rather stay in bed and read a good book!)
#1 List Your Goals
Setting goals can help keep you motivated. Keep a list of daily, weekly or monthly goals on your computer or on your desk, along with small steps you can take to realize these goals.
I know that most people have great intentions when it comes to accomplishing goals. Unfortunately, five hundred random things can happen during the day that keeps us from accomplishing every single task that we plan to do. That’s why breaking down goals into smaller steps helps you accomplish more, especially on days when you have to deal with unexpected issues and emergencies.
List your most important goals first, so you spend the most energy and focus on completing them.
#2 Identify Bad Habits
Being honest about your bad habits doesn’t mean criticizing yourself for bad behavior. Since many habits are unconscious, observe how you move through your day and write down your observations without judgment.
Write down productive, positive ways to overcome, change or substitute these habits for better ones. The goal isn’t to make yourself feel worse about bad habits but to help you learn how to take more control over your behavior and your time by eliminating habits that waste time and energy.
#3 Learn How To Tap Into Intrinsic Motivation
There are two different types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. It’s important to understand each. So, what is the difference between them? With intrinsic motivation, you do something because you enjoy it. You find it rewarding. It makes you feel happy. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, involves external motivation. You are performing a behavior because of a reward. For example, you put in the hours at work because you know you will receive a paycheck.
Both types of motivation play an important role in achieving goals. However, intrinsic motivation is what helps you stay dedicated to goals when the reward isn’t apparent. For example, in the early stages of starting a side hustle or a new business, it will be hard. You probably won’t make money at it. You likely won’t get much recognition for the hard work that you have put in. At first, it’s extremely difficult to get everybody else to be as excited about your business as you are.
If you are motivated solely by extrinsic motivation, then you are not likely to stay dedicated because there is no external reward. But, with intrinsic motivation, in spite of these challenges, you keep going. Even though it is not always easy, your goal is something that you are really motivated by. You put in the hours needed every day because you are super passionate about it.
#4 Take Care of Yourself
If you are working full-time at your regular job, and pursuing a side hustle or taking classes on the weekend, it can be especially difficult to exercise, get a full night’s sleep, and practice mindful eating. However, if you are not taking care of yourself, you will get burned out. In terms of priorities, self-care should be #1. When you take care of yourself, you think more clearly and are more productive.
Practice deep breathing when you feel stressed or anxious. Eat nutritious food and exercise regularly to maintain a healthy body and mind. Give yourself a morning or even a weekend off if you need it.
#5 Confront Fear and Self-Doubt Head-on
Running a business is very scary for many reasons. All entrepreneurs have felt fear, self-doubt, anxiety and stress throughout their careers. Instead of allowing fear and self-doubt to dictate your decisions, simply recognize that these feelings exist and then move on from them.
When you confront them head-on, feelings of fear and self-doubt won’t have as much power over your creativity, business planning and decision-making.
#6 Maintain Motivation by Rewarding Yourself
When you accomplish a goal, give yourself a little reward! Staying motivated requires a lot of energy and focus. So you need to give yourself credit for maintaining momentum. Go out to dinner with friends, watch a movie or take a long bike ride – do something that makes you happy. Maintaining your self motivation allows you to grow and be successful.
